The Oakland Raiders 2017 NFL Draft strategy was apparent; the bigger the better. In the first and second round of the draft, the Silver and Black targeted the secondary with the selection of 6’2” Ohio State cornerback Gareon Conley and 6’4” University of Connecticut safety Obi Melifonwu.
Gareon Conley was sitting in a Canton, Ohio, hotel room with his family watching the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft when his cell phone rang.
While he had an inkling of what the result of that phone call would be – a dream of being picked in the first round of the NFL Draft fulfilled – he didn’t know whose voice was going to be on the other end of the receiver to deliver the news. As it turns out, the voice was the Oakland Raiders jersey authentic general manager Reggie McKenzie, informing the former Ohio State Buckeye – through raucous cheers and tears from Conley’s family – that he would be the newest member of the Silver and Black.
One of my personal joys is seeing the excitement and enthusiasm on college prospects faces as they get dressed up for the NFL Draft and hear their name get called. It’s an important day in the lives of these young men as they take the next step in their career. Not to mention, these are the faces of the next generation which will try to make their mark in the NFL.

During his time at the podium, he expressed his excitement to join the Silver and Black, and said that he has already felt the love from Raider Nation.
After outfitting quarterback Derek Carr with a plethora of offensive weapons in free agency, there was a thought that General Manager Reggie McKenzie would go defensive in the first round of the of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Well, he certainly did, selecting Ohio State cornerback Gareon Conley No. 24 overall late Thursday evening.
“Really, really talented corner that is capable of playing man or zone,” said Head Coach Jack Del Rio of the newest Raider. “He’s a football junkie, and he loves to compete. He’s been well-respected from the people that I’ve spoken to personally about him. He’s a guy that loves to compete, a good teammate, and a really-quality kid. He’s got great length, great speed, really strong workouts through the spring, and then his tape is really good. He’s one of those really clean players that we were fortunate enough to get our hands on here late in the first round.”
Following the Oakland Raiders selection of cornerback Gareon Conley with the 24th overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, here’s the social media reaction from members of the Silver and Black, as well as his alma mater.
With the Oakland Raiders third pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, the team selected defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes from UCLA. After playing for the Bruins the past four years, Vanderdoes will now be bringing his talents to the Silver and Black.

With Denico Autry, Justin Ellis, as well as fellow rookie Eddie Vanderdoes now in the mix, the Raiders will look for another strong campaign from their big fellas in the middle, and with Rookie Mini-Camp now in the books, Hester is looking forward to getting to work with defensive line coach Jethro Franklin and the group as a whole.
“Active defensive lineman. He’s got awareness. He’s not a guy that just pushes blocks and has no idea where the ball is. His film is inconsistent, honestly. There’s some that’s better than others. I just talked to him a little while ago and said, ‘We’re looking for the high energy guy, the motivated guy.’ He’s a really good athlete. He came out of high school highly regarded… Come in here and add depth to our defensive line and give us a little interior push.”
Following the conclusion of Day Two of the 2017 NFL Draft, Oakland Raiders Head Coach Jack Del Rio met with the media for a press conference. He touched on a variety of topics, from the new additions of defensive back Obi Melifonwu and defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes, to newly-signed running back Marshawn Lynch.
